Expanding Healing: Muskwa Lake Wellness Camp Receives $1.6M for Addiction Treatment

We are thrilled to announce that the Government of Saskatchewan has committed $1.6 million in annual funding to expand the Muskwa Lake Wellness Camp's capacity for addictions treatment. This significant investment will enable us to provide 15 additional inpatient treatment spaces, enhancing our ability to offer culturally relevant, land-based health interventions to those in need.

Operated by Kineepik Métis Local #9, the Muskwa Lake Wellness Camp has been a cornerstone of our community for over 37 years. Our grassroots, community-directed program integrates Western addictions education with traditional Indigenous teachings, fostering a holistic approach to healing. The new funding ensures the continuation and expansion of our unique services, allowing us to support more individuals on their recovery journeys.

Mental Health and Addictions, Seniors and Rural and Remote Health Minister Tim McLeod emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "Increasing the number of spaces and providing permanent funding to Muskwa Lake Wellness Camp will provide expert culturally relevant treatment to Saskatchewan residents." This commitment aligns with the provincial government's goal to add 500 addictions treatment spaces across Saskatchewan, with 213 spaces already announced to date.

In addition to the annual funding, the province has previously supported our camp with infrastructure enhancements. In September 2023, a $246,000 grant was provided to construct and furnish a fully functional main cabin, featuring improved spaces for group and individual counselling, as well as industrial kitchen and laundry facilities. This followed a December 2021 investment of $337,000 to winterize existing buildings, enabling year-round operations.
